An icon is a symbol, and iconography is the study of symbols. An iconographer creates an icon to communicate meaning and intent. This may be done by using images or words, but it is often accomplished through symbolic representation. Iconographers use their creativity to produce artwork with meaning far beyond the literal depiction of subject matter on canvas or paper.
